Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Celebrates New Facility with Community Ceremony and National Joe DiMaggio Day

Hollywood, Fla. (July 15, 2011) – Since its inception 19 years ago, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has experienced tremendous growth and earned distinction as the region’s leading children’s hospital, all while operating within the structure of Memorial Regional Hospital. On July 21, 2011, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital will expand into a $140 million facility of its own.

Within these walls, compassionate caregivers will use cutting-edge technology to continue treating a variety of illnesses including cardiac, neurological and oncological conditions. The hospital will also showcase a “Power of Play” theme, with its floors designed in sports, arts, games and dreams motifs. Here, children will receive world-class care, regardless of their ability to pay, which is just how thehospital’s famous founder always wanted it.

Joe DiMaggio was most well-known for his athletic achievements, especially his legendary 56-game hitting streak—a record still unbroken to this day. However, according to his close friend, biographer and attorney Morris Engelberg, it was DiMaggio’s charitable work he particularly wanted to be remembered for.

“Joe had always declined having his name attached to public places,” said Engelberg. “But he had a different perspective when it came to children. He lent the hospital his name and fundraising efforts on the condition that any child could receive the best care in the country no matter their financial situation. “

DiMaggio’s support and commitment helped attract some of the world’s finest pediatric physicians to the hospital, and the funds have ensured the complex medical needs of all children are always met. DiMaggio was known to make frequent visits to the hospital, bringing gifts, chatting with young patients and even cradling newborns.

On July 16, 2011, a community dedication ceremony and celebration will take place at the new Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital throughout the day. This date coincides with the 70th anniversary of DiMaggio’s famous 56-game hitting streak, which will be celebrated on Facebook the following day on July 17, 2011.

“In celebration of this new freestanding facility and the 70th anniversary of Joe’s record-breaking streak, we declare July 17, 2011 Joe DiMaggio Day,” said Elizabeth Kanna, managing partner for Joe DiMaggio, LLC.

DiMaggio’s official fan page (facebook.com/OfficialJoeDiMaggio) will host weekend celebrations live beginning at 10 a.m. EDT on Saturday, July 16, 2011 and provide a platform to celebrate and discuss the life and legacy of this American hero.
